Condemnation of Newspaper La Nacion for Abuse and Gender Discrimination [ES]
Argentinian media company La Nacion SA was ordered to compensate an employee with 583,821 pesos for failing to meet international standards on gender equality. The Court of the National Labour Chamber asked the newspaper to indemnify the employee for gender discrimination and harassment. The company did not comply with international occupational standards relating to gender equality in employment, the court said.

Lawsuit alleges Merck discriminates against women
A Merck & Co. sales representative is suing the drugmaker for at least $100 million, saying Merck doesn’t give women equal opportunities for advancement and punishes employees for taking maternity leave.

UNI calls on Deutsche Post DHL to stop anti-union behaviour
Global unions, including UNI, call for Deutsche Post DHL to stop union busting in Turkey after Courts rule workers’ dismissals unfair and linked to union activity.

Air France fined in pro-Palestinian activist case
A French court has found Air France guilty of discrimination for removing a pro-Palestinian activist from a flight to Israel because she was not Jewish. The court also ordered the airline to pay 13,000 euros (£11,000; $17,000) in fines and damages.

California sues oil company for environmental violations
State Attorney General Kamala Harris is going after Arco and its parent company BP. In a lawsuit filed Monday, the state attorney general and seven counties are accusing the oil company of violating regulations designed to protect the environment.

Wash. fines BP $81,500 for safety violations
Washington state has fined BP more than $80,000 for safety violations at the oil giant's Cherry Point refinery in Whatcom County. The Department of Labor & Industries announced Thursday that it fined BP for six violations, including a "willful violation," of workplace safety.

BP to settle spill-related gender bias case
BP and some of its contractors will pay $5.4 million to settle a federal investigation of allegations that women were denied jobs cleaning up after the 2010 oil spill because of their gender.

Black steel worker wins $25m damages after years of racist abuse by co-workers
A federal jury has awarded $25 million in damages to a U.S. steel plant employee who says his bosses at Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal failed to stop years of racial taunts and insults from co-workers.

Elevator company vows to discipline workers guilty of racial harassment
The elevator company accused of racial harassment by a former employee will take “disciplinary actions” against supervisors or other workers who acted inappropriately, a corporate official promised Wednesday.

DHL Global Sued by EEOC for Harassment and Intimidation of Hispanic Workers, Retaliation
On October 3rd 2011, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced it has filed suit against DHL Global Forwarding, a subsidiary of Global Compact participant Deutsche Post DHL for subjecting a class of Hispanic employees to national origin discrimination. The EEOC’s suit also alleges that DHL Global unlawfully retaliated against a non-Hispanic employee by firing him for reporting the treatment of Hispanic employees.

Alcoa Mill Products to pay more than USD 540,000 to settle discrimination case with US Department of Labor
On August 2nd 2011, Alcoa Mill Products, a subsidiary of Global Compact participant Alcoa Inc, was ordered to pay more than USD 540,000 to settle a discrimination case with the U.S. Department of Labor (more from the DoL...). Alcoa Mill Products Inc. would have to pay USD 484,656.19 in back wages to 37 Hispanics and African-Americans as well as USD 35,516.88 to two women who all were rejected for job positions at the company's plant in Lancaster, Pa. The settlement resolves a finding by the U.S. Department of Labor that the company discriminated against Hispanic, African-American and female applicants for material handler positions. Alcoa Mill Products is part of Alcoa Inc., the world's leading producer of aluminum.
