Chile’s Native Communities Find Ally in Supreme Court

On Apr. 27, a Supreme Court in Chile upheld an earlier decision by an appeals court, which had cancelled the environmental permit granted to the Canadian mining giant Goldcorp for its El Morro gold and copper mine in the northern Chilean region of Atacama. The company reported that it had brought all work at El Morro to a halt, in line with the verdict handed down by the Court, which ordered it to consult with the small Diaguita de los Huascoaltinos indigenous agricultural community before carrying out any activity in their territory. Holcim (US), Inc. Agrees to Pay $36,500 Penalty for Clean Water Act Violations in Florence, Colorado

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has entered into a Combined Complaint and Consent Agreement (CCCA) with Holcim (US), Inc. (Holcim) in response to alleged violations of the Clean Water Act at its limestone and silica quarry and Portland cement plant located in Florence, Fremont County, Colorado. Read the official EPA press release. Holcim (US) is a subsidiary of Swiss Holcim Ltd. (HOLN:SIX), a Global Compact participant since 2003/03/06. Holcim Ltd. was a 'Silver' Contributor to the Foundation for the Global Compact in 2011 and 2010.
